Establishment of a virtual testing laboratory for wood materials and structures (VIWO-LAB)

Description

In construction, the strength of timber materials and structures often needs to be tested, which is costly and time-consuming in the real world. The project creates a digital laboratory where testing can be carried out virtually. This allows architects and engineers to model solutions before construction even starts. For society, greener and more efficient building solutions.

Achievable results

The overall objective of the project is to develop calculation software for complex timber structural assemblies and elements. To achieve this, the sub-objectives are:

  • Literature analysis on existing calculation methods, different types of nodes
  • development of calculation models for major assemblies and structural elements and validation of results
  • creation and integration of parametric calculation models in Versim4D software

Benefit

It will be possible to create more rational timber structures, making this type of construction cheaper, more environmentally friendly and more competitive with other structures such as reinforced concrete or steel. The wider and more rational use of wood as a renewable building material will reduce the negative impact on the environment. Wood-based construction will enable manufacturers to expand their range of construction products with high added value products.
