The LTV feature highlights the scientists' work on next-generation photonic microchips \u2013 an innovation rapidly gaining widespread recognition due to its potential to improve data processing and transmission in both current and future technologies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the news story <strong>Leading researcher at the Institute of Chemical Physics of the University of Latvia and the BioPhoT platform <a href=\"https:\/\/biophot.lv\/en\/project\/heterogeneous-integration-of-phipic-polymers-in-inorganic-integrated-photonic-circuits\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/biophot.lv\/project\/phipic-polimeru-heterogena-integracija-neorganiskas-integretas-fotonikas-shemas\/\">\u201cPhipic\u201d project<\/a> manager Arturs Bundulis<\/strong> explain how a team of researchers replaces standard electrical signals with light, enabling data transmission at unprecedented speeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Latvia is developing technology to improve data security\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KKr1AKXqqpM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By integrating microscopic optical fibers directly onto the chip surface, researchers can use different colors of light as parallel data streams. \u201cInstead of having a single electrical signal carrying information, you have a whole rainbow that can carry information in parallel,\u201d notes Bundulis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leaving aside data processing speed and the potential for significantly faster internet and streaming services, this technology has two significant advantages over traditional electronics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Unlike the ones and zeros of electrical signals, which are easy to read, the laws of physics make it impossible to copy information encoded in the polarization of a photon, thereby ensuring next-level cybersecurity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Light transmission does not emit as much heat as is generated using electricity, significantly reducing the need for energy-intensive cooling systems, such as in data centers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first prototypes of this new generation of chips have already been created and are currently being tested. \u201cIn principle, we are pioneers in Europe and, one might say, also in the world, trying to build such chips,\u201d emphasized Bundulis.
