White laser endoscopy system (ENDOLASE)

Description

Clinical endoscopy has made significant advances, but still around 10% internal tumours are not detected, suggesting the need to improve endoscopic technologies. This project proposes the use of three RGB laser spectral lines, which together also form white light, to illuminate the mucosa as an alternative to traditional broadband white light sources (LED, xenon lamps). This provides an additional three narrow-band spectral images, improving the diagnostic capabilities of the mucosa.

Achievable results

Increasing the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of an existing prototype from 4 to 5 by improving the prototype design and conducting clinical validation in two medical institutions. The plan is to prepare and submit a patent application to facilitate further commercialisation.

Benefit

Around 20 000 endoscopic procedures are performed in Latvia each year, but still around 2000 tumours go undetected. Improved diagnostic technology has the potential to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality due to early detection of undetected tumours.
