Injectable Hydrogel for Antimicrobial and Regenerative Therapy of Bone Fracture Infections (BoneART)

Description

In the context of growing antimicrobial resistance (AMR), there is an urgent need for antibiotic-free solutions for treating bone fracture-related infections, as existing antibiotic-containing biomaterials can promote resistance development, fail to completely eradicate biofilms, and insufficiently support bone tissue healing.

BoneART offers to address this challenge with an injectable hydrogel that provides localized, antibiotic-free antimicrobial action combined with bone regenerative properties. Under the guidance of an interdisciplinary team, BoneART aims to perfect an injectable, antibiotic-free hydrogel with local antimicrobial effects and bone healing support, providing a validated, lab-tested bone biomaterial for further preclinical research and future clinical implementation.

The Achievable Results

a) sterile, dual-syringe injectable BoneART hydrogel with a validated laboratory protocol.
b) proven non-antibiotic antimicrobial effect and in vitro bone tissue regeneration potential.
c) an IP and development roadmap prepared for further preclinical studies and future clinical implementation.

The Anticipated Benefit

BoneART promotes safer, more efficient treatment of bone fracture-related infections, reducing the need for high doses of antibiotics and repeat surgeries. It helps mitigate the risk of antimicrobial resistance and shortens patient recovery time, potentially also lowering healthcare costs.
